COLUMBUS Faced with articles of impeachment from his own party and a pending investigation by the state’s inspector general, embattled Attorney General Marc Dann said he will not resign despite reports earlier today that he would.

“Marc Dann has not resigned and no further comments are planned,” said a brief statement from the attorney general’s office.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Columbus Dispatch, both citing anonymous sources, said on their Web sites that Dann would step down today. The Dispatch said Dann was negotiating his resignation.

Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher met with Dann today.

Apparently, those negotiations broke down when the House and later the Senate today added an emergency clause to a bill that will allow Ohio Inspector General Thomas Charles to investigate Dann and his office. The emergency clause allows Charles to proceed immediately as soon as Gov. Ted Strickland signs Senate Bill 3, which he is expected to do.

State Sen. Kirk Schuring, R-Jackson Township, said Charles told him he’s ready to go Wednesday if necessary.

State Rep. Bob Hagan, D-Youngstown, told the Warren Tribune he was trying to broker a deal, but Dann wanted more time. The inclusion of the emergency clause crashed the deal.
